All Home Improvement Contractors must be certified by the :
Environmental Protection Agency . 
This is not a suggestion : It is a Federal law.
There are $37, 500.00 fines involved for failure to comply. Make sure your contractor has, and can produce their EPA Certification number for you on all proposals and contracts. 

Most houses built before 1978 contain lead based paint . During renovations the lead is released in the way of dust due to the disturbance.
What this means to you : Certified firms have the knowledge and training necessary to prevent lead contamination of the home through the use of safe work practices where lead will be disturbed . The Federal law has been implemented in order to reduce the risk of  health hazards to adults and children . These hazards include but are not limited to :
Lead poisoning 
Damage to the brain and central nervous system
Decreased intelligence and learning difficulties
Kidney damage
Damage to a fetus
   High blood pressure
